Stimulus-Funded ENERGY STAR Appliance Rebate Program Now Closed
8,577 Rebates Claimed by New Mexico Citizens
SANTA FE, NM – The resoundingly successful New Mexico Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate Program that kicked off in April this year and was reopened on November 29 is now fully depleted of funds and the program and website are closed. Rebates will be paid to an additional 217 applicants who submitted complete applications following the November 29 announcement. Applicants who will not receive a rebate will be informed in writing by the rebate program manager, Energy Federation Inc.
“The Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate Program was a huge success that benefitted New Mexico citizens thanks to the cooperation and support of its partners,” said Harold Trujillo, program manager. “Credit goes to our utility partners, Public Service Company of New Mexico and the New Mexico Gas Company, which provided the 25 percent of the DOE match required and also to our sister agency, the Human Services Department, that notified low income families and to the Rural Electric Company that notified its members about the program.”
This program promoted New Mexico retailers’ appliance sales of over $8 million, generated $400,000 in gross receipts taxes for the state, and saved New Mexican consumers over $1.7 million on appliance purchase prices. Lifetime benefits from this program include an estimated 9.9 million kilowatt-hours in energy use reduction, over 310 million gallons of water conserved, and reduction of the state's carbon footprint by over 15 million pounds of CO2-equivalent.
The Energy Minerals and Natural Resources Department received $1.9 million to implement the State Energy Efficiency Appliance Rebate Program. The funding was made available to New Mexico through a formula grant from the U.S. Department of Energy, as authorized under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
