Government Lead by Example: Higher Education

The Higher Education Department (HED) is a cabinet-level state agency that regulates all public post-secondary institutions in New Mexico, as well as private institutions that are not regionally accredited. Post-secondary institutions are governed by their own boards or regents, but also are accountable to the Governor, the Legislative Finance Committee, and HED. HED supports the energy reduction and green building design requirements of Executive Order 2006-001. New Mexico's universities, colleges, and community colleges are tremendous resources for the state in many areas, including science, research, engineering, and clean energy technologies.

Executive Order 2006-001 directed HED to comply with this order. ECMD is a member of the HED Project Review Committee and all projects are required to provide documentation for how they are meeting the Executive Order. Greenhouse Gas emission reductions of post-secondary institutions are not currently counted toward compliance with the Chicago Climate Exchange.
