The Chama Forestry District office is on US-84 at the NM-512 turnoff, 10 miles south of Chama. The District’s land base includes Rio Arriba and San Juan Counties, and the west half of Taos County. This area includes 357,000 acres of private commercial forestland, and 88,000 acres of state and private non-commercial forestland. The District’s primary focus is working with landowners to help them responsibly manage their forest resources.
Donal Griego, Chama District Forester, most recently served the Division as the State's Fire Management Officer. He was selected as Chama District Forester in June, 2009.
Pablo Montenegro, Chama District Fire Management Officer (FMO) has been with the district since August 2008. He is responsible for fire prevention planning, setting up fire training courses and suppression work that goes into managing wildfires on the District’s state and private lands. The District responds to approximately 50 wildfires each year, with another 100+ handled by cooperating rural volunteer fire departments. The District has a number of wildland/urban interface areas that are of great concern in terms of protection. Pablo works with these communities and their Volunteer Fire Departments to educate home owners on the importance of defensible space.
Joe Carrillo is the District’s Timber Management Officer and is serving as the Acting District Forester. Joe has been with the Forestry Division since January 2005. His responsibilities include writing forest management plans, providing on-site technical forestry advice, and inspecting timber sales to ensure compliance with State Forestry’s harvesting regulations. Joe also helps with the Wildland/urban interface work occurring on the District by working with private landowners to design harvest prescriptions around their homes.
Lindsey Quam is our Staff Forester. He has worked on the District since December 2007 in this position. Lindsey is responsible for assisting Joe with the District’s timber program. He also writes forest management plans and provides on-site technical advice to landowners and other agencies. Lindsey works closely with landowners on setting up Wildland/Urban interface projects as well as working with the National Tree Farm Program. Working with contractors and ensuring their compliance to state regulations occupies most of Lindsey's time.
Cindy Friday is the District Administrative Management Officer. Cindy has worked on the District since March 2001 and keeps the administrative processes flowing smoothly. She is the District’s secretary, purchasing agent, dispatcher, travel coordinator, budget analyst, and receptionist all rolled into one. |
