Summary of Work
The Swastika Mine and Dutchman Canyon Reclamation Project is located about 4.5 miles northwest of Raton in Colfax County, New Mexico. The project area is on the Vermejo Park Ranch.
The project included work to safeguard hazardous mine features at the abandoned Swastika coal mine, to stabilize and reclaim abandoned coal gob piles at the Swastika Mine and at Dutchman Canyon, to realign and restore a reach of the Dillon Canyon channel at the Swastika Mine, and to improve an existing evaporation pond that intercepts mine seepage at Dutchman Canyon.
