Excellence in Reclamation Award Program

The main shaft of the Spencer Mine had captured storm flows from the alluvial fan on which it was constructed, leading to undermining of the shaft collar and steel headframe and forming an arroyo that was cutting its way up the valley floor. During construction, the headframe was carefully dismantled and the steel tested for radioactive contamination before being sold for scrap.Onsite uranium mine waste was placed into an onsite waste repository in the cavity created by the headcutting arroyo in order to minimize excavation and cover with at least three feet of soil. The site was reclaimed to background radiological levels. This Google Maps image of the completed work shows the transformation of the site, graded to eliminate the headcutting arroyo and to restore and stabilize the original depositional landform.

The Excellence in Reclamation Award program was initiated in 1996 to recognize excellence in coal, hard rock and aggregate mine reclamation and abandoned mine land reclamation projects. EMNRD presents the awards at the annual New Mexico Mining Association Conference.
