Four endangered Bolson Tortoises now call the park "home", after LDZG teamed with the Turner Endangered Species Fund to protect and increase the native population in Mexico.

Visitors will take a self guided 1.3 mile walking tour to see various plant communities and animal habitats of the Chihuahuan Desert ecosystem.

Like many animals at LDZG, Maggie Oso (shown) cannot survive on her own in the wild. Maggie was rescued and receives behavioral enrichment through painting - which are sold at the park.

For more than 20 years, LDZG has celebrated the history and culture of the Mescalero Apache at the annual "Mescal Roast" each May. Mescal (agave) was traditionally a staple food source for these Apache people.

Accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), LDZG actively participates in species conservation, education, science and recreation and is dedicated to the plants and animals of the Chihuahuan Desert.

The Gypsum Hills habitat displays selenite - the crystalline form of  gypsum, along with plants known as gypsophiles which require gypsum to survive. Native plants at the park depict typical plants found in the Chihuahuan Desert .
