  Park Stories

Many of the same things that attract people to New Mexico State Parks today, such as fishing, camping, boating and hiking, attracted people in the distant past. This has resulted in unique historic resources within the New Mexico State Park system. These resources embody our park stories.

State Parks is working hard to preserve and interpret these special resources. Some of these places are open and interpreted for park visitors. State Parks asks our visitors to enjoy the heritage preserved in our parks and assist in the stewardship of these special resources.

Here are just a few of the heritage parks you can visit in our State Park system.

  • Enjoy nature, prehistory and ranching history at Oliver Lee Memorial State Park.
  • Re-live coal mining history at Sugarite Canyon State Park.
  • Visit our new Exhibit Hall at Pancho Villa State Park in March 2006.
  • Experience Mescalero Apache traditions at the Living Desert Mescal Roast.
  • Dam history comes to life at Elephant Butte Lake State Park.
  • Swim at a historic CCC recreation area at Bottomless Lakes State Park.
  • Plan your next event in the mountains at the historic Hyde Park Lodge.

State Parks educators provide hands-on, outdoor programs at these and other parks, sharing our park stories.  Please visit our Event Calendar for event dates and times.
