Basalt cliff formations (shown) create a scenic backdrop at the park. A layer of rock at the park's south end is believed to have been formed from the dust of a meteor that struck the earth 65 million years ago.

It is surmised that the names for “Sugarite Canyon” and the park's "Chicorica Creek" may have derived from Spanish or Comanche phrases. From birding to fishing, including the annual "Fishing Derby," Sugarite is full of history and activities.

Remnants of Sugarite's historic coal camp of the late 1800's stretch for .5 miles in the park and contain foundations of homes, offices, and more. The “Coal Camp Interpretive Trail” winds through the ruins of the Sugarite coal camp.
