Bottomless Lakes State Park (Click Here for Park Page)

Description: Series of eight small spring fed lakes off the Pecos River.  The lakes are bottomless in name only. The lakes are sink holes that range from 17 to 90 feet deep. Lea Lake is on the south end of the park and is the largest. Here the visitor will find a sandy beach for swimming and the opportunity to rent paddleboards and pedal boats at a nominal fee during the summer months.

Directions: About fifteen miles southeast of Roswell, New Mexico via US 380 and SR 409 .

From Albuquerque take I-40 east for about 55 miles to Exit 218.  Take US 285 south for 140 miles to Roswell.  From Roswell turn east on US 380 for 12 miles.  Then turn onto New Mexico Highway 409 south three miles to the park entrance.

Lake Names:     Lazy Lagoon, Cottonwood, Mirror, Devils Inkwell, Figure Eight, Pasture Lake, and Lea Lake.

Water Sports: Paddleboards and pedal boats rentals. Small gas or electric motor (under 3 hp) or hand propelled craft, swimming, scuba diving and fishing (Cottonwood Lake and Devil's Inkwell).

Ramps: None

Docks: One. Used to launch rental paddleboards and pedal boats.

Marinas/Rentals: No Marina but State Parks rents paddleboards and pedal boats from Memorial Day to Labor Day for a nominal fee. 

Wind Warning Lights: None

Fish Species: Rainbow Trout are stocked in winter in both Cottonwood Lake and Devil's Inkwell Lake.

Non-game native species of the Park are Pecos Pupfish, Pecos Gambusia, Plains Killifish, Mexican Tetra, and Red Shiner.

Special Boating Restrictions: New Mexico State Parks Regulation 16.1 Bottomless Lakes: Operation of motorboats powered by more than three horsepower is prohibited.
