McKinley County New Mexico
General: Good for paddlecraft, sit-on-top kayaks, canoe or fish at a beautiful lake. Few boats with small outboards and size of the lake. Ponderosa pines and sandstone bluffs offer a stunning background for your recreation. Ramah Lake is approximately 100 acres.
Ramah Lake is man made, the Mormon pioneers laboring to build the dike in 1894 for irrigation. During the latter part of the 19th century the valley's fields provided the entire potato crop for the city of Gallup. The dam failed twice, once in 1897 and again in 1905 because of heavy runoff during the spring thaws. Today, Ramah Lake is a popular regular fishing site in the area. Leval of lake drops shallow to lake summer.
Fish: Rainbow Trout, some possible Perch and Catfish.

Special Conditions: The lake is a no-wake lake (no whitewater off the bow or sides of the vessel..use minimum speed necessary to maintain some forward motion) Bring Sunscreen and bug repellent (the bugs that make for good fishing)
Water Levels are variable with lots of weedy vegetation at low levels. Launching may be a problem for any small motorized vessels. The lake has been closed in the past due to warm weather and drought conditions causing fish kills. Not really icing over for ice fishing.
Ramp: Two Dirt Ramps at lake. Generally poor condition for most trailerables that are over 16'.
