THE LAND & WATER CONSERVATION FUND

LWCF has provided a permanent legacy of parks, facilities and open space statewide.  The LWCF Fund Act of 1965 (P.L. 85-578) created the program to stimulate, encourage and assist state and local governments to acquire, develop and improve viable outdoor recreation areas and facilities.  New Mexico has received $37.8 million dollars from LWCF since its inception.  State agencies, municipalities, counties, schools, and tribes have developed and improved over 1,000 close-to-home outdoor recreation areas in response to the needs of its citizens and visitors.  Community projects include parks, baseball and soccer fields, trails, playgrounds, and picnic areas. 

• State Parks administers the LWCF federal grant program.
• Funds are provided through the U.S. Department of Interior’s National Park Service.
• LWCF is a 50 % federal and 50 % local matching grant program.
• Currently, there is no funding available.  Please continue to visit this site for future updates.

The state is required to inspect all projects funded by LWCF since 1965 every five years.  Please register with Maurice (Moses) Mondary for access to the LWCF ON-LINE for inspection forms and news. We will continue to contact project sponsors by mail regarding projects due for inspection until the database is completed and posted here.
