CARLSBAD BRINE WELL REMEDIATION AUTHORITY
Description
The Carlsbad Brine Well Remediation Authority (Authority) was established by the New Mexico Legislature during the 2017 Legislative Session as an advisory authority to recommend policy and advise the New Mexico Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department (EMNRD) on the remediation of the Carlsbad brine well. In the 2018 Legislature, the powers and duties of the Authority were expanded to provide that the Authority “shall set policy and regulate, supervise and administer the remediation of the Carlsbad brine well.”
The board of directors of the Authority consists of eight members who represent state and local entities. These include the Mayor of the City of Carlsbad, the Chair of the Eddy County Board of County Commissioners, the Manager of the Carlsbad Irrigation District, the Attorney General and the heads of four state agencies. The Legislature directed that the EMNRD Secretary shall serve as Chair of the Authority. The Authority is administratively attached to EMNRD.
