State Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate Program (SEEARP)

Harold Trujillo

APPLIANCE REBATES COMING TO NEW MEXICO RESIDENTS IN 2010!

ECMD plans to have the State Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate Program implemented by April 2010. As now designed, the Program will offer rebates of $200 on new ENERGY STAR clothes washers, gas furnaces, and refrigerators. This program is made possible by American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funding through the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to ECMD, which serves as the New Mexico State Energy Office.

ECMD is currently finalizing New Mexico’s plan with the DOE. Although funding is already allocated to New Mexico, time devoted to program development activities prior to implementation is needed to develop a top notch program. These activities include DOE approval, selection of a program administrator, setting up the program with retail stores, and utility companies obtaining approval from the New Mexico Public Regulation Commission.

Some of the program requirements will probably be:
• In order to receive the rebate, the old appliance must be removed from the home and properly recycled.
• New Mexico’s rebate will only be available to New Mexico residents.
• The rebates will only apply to purchases made within the yet-to-be-designated time frame and will not be retroactive to include purchases made prior to that.

Please watch for future announcements at ECMD’s website, www.CleanEnergyNM.org, as well as in utility bills, newspapers, and on television.
