Orogrande Mine Safeguard Project - Phase II

Pioneer Industries of Albuquerque, NM started construction on this project on June 9, 2008, and finished November 13, 2008.

The Orogrande Mine Safeguard Project - Phase II is located approximately three miles northwest of Orogrande in Otero County, New Mexico. The project area lies on private and public land in portions of Sections 3, 4 and 10, Township 22 South, Range 8 East and Section 34, Township 21 South, Range 8 East, New Mexico Principal Meridian.

The project basically involved the following work:

  • Backfilling of 75 mine features using mine waste and other nearby material;
  • Plugging five mine features using polyurethane foam;
  • Construction of 16 structures to protect wildlife while safeguarding mine features;
  • Seeding of all areas disturbed by construction.

The project is scattered over an area of approximately four sections of land.

Various bat species use many of the mine features scattered around the area for night roosting and hibernation and possibly maternity activity. These species include Antrozous pallidus, Corynorhinus townsendii, Myotis velifer, Myotis ciliolabrum and Myotis thysanodes.
