The lake is attractive to birds such as the endangered bald eagle. In 2005, a rare albino Turkey Vulture was spotted at the park. Heron celebrates its annual "Osprey Fest" each July.

Heron is a "no wake" lake, providing a quiet atmosphere while offering numerous primitive and developed sites for its more than 129,000 (average) visitors per year.

Heron Lake is an anglers delight, stocked with Rainbow Trout and Kokanee Salmon. Salmon snagging takes place each year in November.
